How to capture a screenshot of a movie

DesiTorrents has a terrifically helpful FAQ page that I'll be pointing to on the Darknet resources page (if I ever find time to build it). Here's one snippet:

How do I capture a screenshot of a movie?

Here is a method for creating a snapshot from your movies for both realplayer or windows media player! Please use one of these two programs for creating your snapshot!

For RealPlayer, you will need to turn off the optimized display. You can do this by running RealPlayer, clicking on View -> Preferences, going to the Performance tab, unchecking the box labeled "Use optimized video display", hitting OK, and restarting RealPlayer. Now you may make take a screenshot by pressing the [ALT + PRNTSCRN] combination. You can paste this screenshot into any graphics editing program (e.g. MS Paintbrush) and save the file. When you are done taking screenshots, you should re-enable the optimized video display because this makes videos play smoother and look better.

For Windows Media Player, you have to disable Hardware Acceleration. You can do this in Windows Media Player 6.4 and later by clicking on View -> Options and moving the Hardware Acceleration slider to None. You can do this in Windows Media Player 7 by clicking on Tools -> Options, going to the Performance tab, moving the Hardware Acceleration slider to None, and restarting Windows Media Player. Now you may make take a screenshot by pressing the [ALT + PRNTSCRN] combination. You can paste this screenshot into any graphics editing program (e.g. MS Paintbrush) and save the file. When you are done taking screenshots, you should move the Hardware Acceleration slider back to Full because this makes videos play smoother and look better.

For Mac, with the movie in normal size (not the cmd-F fullscreen size, just for better quality and smaller image size) just pause the movie when you want, in most of software with space bar, and hit cmd-shift-4 (the upper 4, not the numeric pad). A cross will appear to let you select the part of the screen to capture. (Note: with 3, you capture the whole screen).
It will create a .jpg .tiff or, most probably under OSX, a .pdf file on your desktop. As it's customary to send jpegs here for that kind of things, drop it on any graphic application (Photoshop style, but even Preview will do) and save (or export) it as a jpeg with a quality of 50 on 100 -- or 5 on 10.

Excellent information. Exactly what I was looking for.

Note: for Windows Media Player 10, to get to the accelaration option it is slightly different to 6.4; go to Tools > Options > Performance > Scroll the bar at the bottoms.

Many thanks.

Thanks for this. I have been searching in vain for a year to do this.

In the current version 10.5 of Real Player, this worked by Tools -> Preferences -> Hardware -> Enable optimized video and disable overlays

I'm in the same boat as MJ Notellinu I have tried all the suggestions but when I paste to Paint and save later in My Pics the image is just a blank screen. In fact while the screen is up in paint and when I resume play on wmp the image in paint runs as well so I think the problem has something to do with once wmp is turned off, there is no more image transmission through either Paint or in the My Pics file. Please help...

Thanks a lot! I was trying to figure that 'blank screen' problem for a while...so I searched frantically all over google for help..and landed across here! Thank you so much! Woo hoo!

I have the screenshot problem again. With my previous computer everything worked perfectly; disabling hardware acceleration let me take pics. But now I have the deadly combination of Win Media Player 10 and Win XP, and this does not work for it. I found out CTRL-I also takes a screenshot, but either way when I paste it in Paint or anywhere, it still appears in the image background as if acceleration were still on.

I have EXACTLY the same problem as MJ Notellinu and S. I have WMP 11 and realplayer v10 (it also doesn't work in powerDVD) - when i turn all the acceleration and overlays off and prntscrn, the picture moves in paint and when the DVD is taken out - the whole thing turns black! is there a different way to make this work in these versions?

and to reyna: go onto tools, preferences, hardware and there it should be - it's there for me anyway. Also it's tools on WMP not view and it should be there. hope that helped :P

Thanks for the tip on screen shots... it was pretty wacky to have the image be there and then go to black as soon as I saved or closed Media Player. Worked like a charm once I turned off the hardware accel!

I have the same problems as reyna and the others. I tried this one time and it worked....it hasn't worked since. Anyone have a recommendation of a player that will allow screenshots? Better yet, one MADE to take screenshots?

Well for me I don't know what type of Windows Media Player I have.
Also I have windows movie maker and I don't know how to open my dvd in it.
I have made a DVD on my dvd player by hooking my ps2 up to it. Well I want to take screen shots of the video game, and I can't seem to get the pictures I am wanting. All I get when I paste it into PS is either a black screen with WMP around it or I get a movie picture. As in I just pasted the whole movie into PS. I can't take pictures. Can soemone please help me. It is driving me up a wall.......
