Name this book

I met with Eric Nelson, my editor at Wiley & Sons, on Friday, and he suggested that we should ask my blog readers what we should name my upcoming book.

The title is set: Darknet. Here are some choices for the subtitle:

Darknet: Hollywood's War Against Internet Whiz Kids, Gadget Hounds, and Our Mind-Blowing Digital Future

Darknet: Hollywood's War Against the Digital Generation

Darknet: How Hollywood Is Turning Us All Into Digital Outlaws

Darknet: Hollywood's War Against Our Inevitable Digital Future

Darknet: We're All Digital Outlaws Now

Darknet: All Things Fun, Digital, and Totally Illegal

Darknet: How Hollywood Is Locking Down Your Favorite Digital Gizmos

Darknet: Digital Nation vs. Hollywood's Control Freaks

Darknet: Will Hollywood Usher In the Digital Dark Ages?

Darknet: Hollywood's War Against Our Digital Destiny

Darknet: Hollywood's War Against Generation Internet

Darknet: Hollywood's War Against Geeks, Gadget Hounds and the Digital Generation

Darknet: How the Personal Media Revolution Is Scaring the Bejesus Out of Hollywood

Darknet: Hollywood vs. the Digital Freedom Fighters

Darknet: Hollywood's Suicidal War On Geeks, Gizmo Freaks, and the iGeneration

Darknet: How Hollywood Is Turning Gadget Lovers Into Digital Outlaws

We agreed that our original subtitle -- Darknet: Remixing the Future of Entertainment -- was inadequate because the title didn't work with the subtitle.

I know that almost none of you have read the entire manuscript, so what we're really asking is: Which title (a) successfully conveys the thrust of the book, and (b) is provocative enough to make you want to pick it up at a bookstand?

Without a doubt: Darknet: Hollywood's War Against the Digital Generation

Sounds good to me! Too bad "generation" traditionally means an age bracket of 20-25 years, since this cuts across all age groups. Still, the digital age is only a generation or so old, so readers will probably understand the intent...

Yes. Some of the titles are too long, some are too vague. 'War' is a dramatic enough word and I think it's to the point. Usually simple is the best way to go. I also think that the traditional meaning of the word 'generation' is fading. It is not so much a description of an 'age bracket', as perhaps of a new movement, especially in that context. Also I would think that the readers, the book is aiming at, would pretty much understand the intent (as you said).

How about:
Darknet: Old Hollywood's Last Stand Against the Rise of Digital Freedom

This subtitle frames the battle between old and new Hollywoods, and doesn't consider Hollywood a monolith. For the old Hollywood and its business models, it is definitely a last stand. I hope the book has enough on the emergent "new" Hollywood so that readers can see that "digital freedom fighters" are engaged in a worthy cause. (To my mind the real battle is between vested Hollywood power holders and new media entrants, such as Apple and others.)
